A Strategic Planning Framework

The Natural Step framework defines a set of basic conditions that must be met in a sustainable society. The Oakville Sustainability Initiative along with The Natural Step framework will help your organization incorporate sustainability into their strategic planning and decision-making processes. The A-B-C-D approach includes four elements, which are repeated as the organization progresses along various pathways towards sustainability.

A = Awareness:
Align your organization around a common awareness of the situation.

B = Baseline Mapping:
What does your organization look like today in terms of the systems conditions?

C = Creating a Vision:
What will your organization look like when it is sustainable and meeting the four system conditions?

D = Down to Action:
Backcasting from where we want to be to where we are now, what steps do we need to take to get there? How can we support these actions?

The Four System Conditions

In the sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing...

  1. concentrations of substances extracted from the Earth's crust,
  2. concentrations of substances produced by society,or
  3. degradation by physical means
    and, in that society...

  4. people are not subject to conditions that systematically undermine their capacity to meet their           needs.
